Success Strategies for Working or Studying From Home

Category

Many of us have recently found ourselves navigating the new and unfamiliar world of working or studying from home. Although this situation may prove to have certain conveniences, it also comes with its own set of struggles. Here are a few tips to help you be successful as a student or a professional from home:

Set a Schedule

The best way to stay focused and productive is to set a schedule, starting with a consistent morning routine. Try to wake up at the same time every day. Set times for working or studying, but also time for breaks, personal activities, and home/child responsibilities. You may be able to continue with something similar to your normal schedule or it may look completely different based on the current changes to your life. The key is to determine what works for you and stick to it.

Find Your Space

Whether you have an entire room to dedicate to an office or just one spot at your dining room table, find a space that meets your needs and make it your own. Ideally, this area would be away from distractions, but this may not be possible so refer to your schedule and inform your family that at designated work or study times they are to function as though you are “at the office or school.” You may even want to make a sign that says this as a reminder. Noise-cancelling headphones are also a great idea for reducing disturbances and give the impression that you are not available.

Connect With Others

Identify friends, co-workers, family, classmates, and instructors who you can check in with on a regular basis. Then add them to your schedule. Although you can’t meet in-person, most people you know are only a phone call, text message, email, or video chat away. Staying in contact with those who are sharing in this experience will increase your motivation, decrease your stress, and encourage your success.

Understand Your Resources

You may be isolated at home, but you are certainly not alone. Make sure you understand what resources are available to you from your place of employment or school. Nicolet College faculty and staff are all working to help students succeed during this difficult time. Always reach out to your instructors with questions or concerns. Our website also has commonly asked questions and contact information for additional resources including academic support, counseling, tutoring, financial assistance, and more.

Do Your Best

Working or studying from home is not for everyone even under ordinary circumstances. And during this unprecedented time, you may also be dealing with additional challenges like having children at home, learning new technology, and being distanced from support and resources. Just do your best. That’s all anyone can expect. We’re going to get through this together.
