5 Ways to Start Your Term Right

Category

The beginning of the term can be stressful; every class has different schedules and requirements, the upcoming projects and tests can feel overwhelming, and you may be meeting a whole new set of classmates and instructors. But there are ways you can start your term on the right foot.

1. Get to Know Your Instructor

Take advantage of small class sizes to get to know your instructor. They are a wealth of knowledge in your field of study and would likely enjoy the opportunity to share more about their experience with you. Building this relationship will also help you reach out for assistance when you need it.

2. Make a Friend

College is more enjoyable when you have someone to connect with. Introduce yourself to your classmates; ask if anyone wants to form a virtual study group or attend a virtual student event. Personal connection doesn't have to mean in-person; getting to know others, even virtually, can make all the difference in your online courses.

3. Set a Weekly Schedule

Take a look at the activities that make up your week; class, work, hobbies, kids schedules etc. Then build in some time for studying and school work. This is especially important for those taking online courses or programs that are self-paced. It’s easy to put off assignments in these situations and end up with a bottle-neck effect leaving you scrambling to meet deadlines and doing less than satisfactory work.

4. Look Ahead

Make note of when large projects or tests are due so your work and personal commitments don’t collide with this peak time for studying. If you already have conflicting events, then you can figure out a plan for working ahead. Either way, comparing your schedules in advance will help you prioritize your time and avoid surprise conflicts.

5. Find Your Resources

Colleges are set-up to help you succeed. No matter what your challenge is, there is likely a person or resource to assist you. Even if you don’t need the help right now, learn what resources are available to you so if you start to struggle during the semester you’ll know right where to go. You can ask your instructor or academic advisor for information or try searching the college website for student resources.

The best way to succeed in your classes is to be prepared and get to know those around you who are there to support you. This will help you tackle any course or challenge you face during your term.
