WALKING 500 MILES ON THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO
Thursday, October 23

10 am
Nicolet College, Northwoods Center 207-209
Instructor: Nancy Jensch

On September 2024, I departed St Jean Pied de Port, France, on foot, for a journey of 500 miles across Northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela, where St James the Apostle is believed to be entombed. The Camino de Santiago or “The Way of St James” is an ancient pilgrimage route that has been trekked since approximately 900 a.d. It is a region incredibly rich in culture and history.

Although I was traveling solo, I was rarely alone. The community of “pilgrims” from all over the world support each other on what can occasionally be a difficult route. The relationships formed were the most rewarding part of the journey.

I will try to convey the depth of this experience, as I tell stories of my walk. Useful tips and resources for anyone interested in their own pilgrimage on “The Way of St James” will be provided.

Nancy Jensch is a long-time resident of the Northwoods. She is married, a mother to three grown sons and a grandmother to three beautiful granddaughters. Currently working at Peter Christensen Health Center in Lac du Flambeau as an RN Diabetes Educator, National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach, and a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. She enjoys hiking, biking, downhill skiing, kayaking, and lifelong learning. Currently trying to teach herself how to play the piano and speak Spanish.
