THE TRUTH ABOUT READING: THE INVISIBLE CRISIS HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT DOCUMENTARY FILM

The Truth About Reading
Nicolet College Theatre
Free Admission

Free Admission - Click here to RSVP

This eye-opening documentary film from Emmy award-winning director Nick Nanton tells the story of illiteracy and sub-literacy in America. The purpose of the film is to spread the word, not just about the detrimental effect the crisis is having on our society and economy, but that there are proven and effective solutions already available. With a growing voice and an everincreasing need for resources (many kids are on long waiting lists for services because the support to handle this large number of people is not there), we can stand up together and make what seems impossible – possible! The Truth about Reading will engage and captivate, while educating and motivating viewers.

BUFFALO NICHOLS CONCERT SPONSORED BY WXPR

Nicolet College Theatre
Admission: $28.00

Purchase tickets at wxpr.org

Beer, wine, and concessions will be available for purchase beginning at 6:30 pm.

Since his earliest infatuation with the guitar, Buffalo Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer.

While acknowledging the joy, exuberance, and triumph contained in the blues, Nichols looks intently at the genre’s origins, which harken back to complicated and dire circumstances for Black Americans. With this in mind, Nichols says there is a missing link, which he’s often used as a compass: Black stories aren’t being told responsibly in the genre anymore. To begin changing that, Buffalo Nichols gets the chance to tell his own story in the right way.

Mae Simpson shook up the Twin Cities’ scene in 2019, winning the Battle of the Bands and City Pages’ Best of the Twin Cities Readers’ Choice Poll, along with being a nominee for “Best Live Concert.” Mae and her seven-piece band, which includes a horn section, blur the lines between a wide range of influences, from the depth and energy of funk and rock down to the melodic edge of R&B and folk. Helen Teague of Minnesota Public Radio said, “Mae’s voice is larger than life – but not as large as her uncontainable energy that radiates from the stage.”

Known for their intense and exciting live shows, the band has an immediate impact that favors the human connection between the musicians and the audience. If you are a fan of artists such as Alabama Shakes, Lake Street Dive, and Bruce Springsteen, Mae Simpson is right up your alley.

An eclectic group of sixth-graders vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.
