THE SALVAGE OF THE USS MONITOR
Tuesday, May 5
10:00 AM
Nicolet College, Northwoods Center 207-209
Instructor: Henry Schwartz, MD, FACP

This class will take us on a 230-foot-deep dive into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina to see one of our country’s most famous shipwrecks— the USS Monitor. This Civil War ironclad sank in 1862 in a storm off Cape Hatteras, after having successfully fought the CSS Virginia (originally the USS Merrimack). The shipwreck site became the first national marine sanctuary in 1975. Salvage operations occurred from 1999 through 2002. Henry Schwartz, MD, FACP Captain, Medical Corps, in the US Navy (Retired) will speak on his role in the salvage operations of the USS Monitor. He was present during the summers of 2001 and 2002.

Henry Schwartz is a Minocqua native and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a Doctorate in Medicine. He served in the United States Navy on the USS James Monroe and the USS Daniel Boone. He attended Submarine School and is qualified in Submarines. From 1972 to 1981 he worked as a physician in private practice in Woodruff, Wisconsin. In 1981 he returned to active duty in the US Navy. He has experience in Navy Experimental Diving and worked as a Director of Undersea Medicine and Radiation Health with the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington DC. He was also part of the Navy Sea Systems Command and medical advisor for the Supervisor of Diving and Salvage in Washington DC.
