WOMEN OF THE FUR TRADE
Wednesday, May 20 | 10:00 AM
Nicolet College, Northwoods Center 207-209
Instructor: Bob Paine
Until recently, historians have typically ignored the roles women played during the North American fur trade period (early 1600s to around 1870). This was especially true of roles typically assigned to men, such as business owner and trader. This presentation covers 15 women (indigenous, Métis, and European) and explores which of 14 different roles they played.

Bob has been a living history interpreter focusing on the fur trade for over 25 years and has read extensively on the topic. He has given presentations on various aspects of the fur trade at numerous venues, including at the Annual Gatherings of the North American Voyageur Council (NAVC). The NAVC is a non-profit educational organization for individuals interested in the fur trade era. Its membership includes researchers, reenactors, living historians, and history enthusiasts, all sharing a deep passion for the fur trade.
