ARE WE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE?
Friday, May 15
5 — 7 pm
Northwoods Center 208
Instructor: Jim Head
Cost: $25
Over 5,000 exoplanets have been discovered, and astronomers estimate a trillion more in our Milky Way. What are the odds life exists beyond Earth? This program explores humanity’s quest to answer one of its most profound questions. We’ll examine how NASA and others search for signs of extraterrestrial life—from robotic missions to asteroids, moons, and planets to telescopes scanning distant exoplanets. Along the way, we’ll look at Frank Drake’s famous equation, an informal framework for estimating intelligent civilizations. Through vivid imagery,
accessible science, and thought-provoking discussion, participants gain insight into scientific methods, discoveries, and the philosophical implications of the search for life beyond Earth.
Cancellations must be made five days before the initial class session to be eligible for a refund. Nicolet College reserves the right to cancel, reschedule, substitute instructors, or make any changes to classes as necessary. Age requirement for Community Education classes: Unless otherwise specified in the class description, children under 18 are allowed, but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
