The Holmboe Conifer Forest

Nearly sixty-one years after Frithjof Holmboe donated the beloved Holmboe Conifer Forest to The Nature Conservancy, this class will peel back the curtain on the man behind the legacy—a world-traveling, self-made botanist whose love of nature shaped the heart of the greater Rhinelander community.
Mark Miazga will take participants on a historical journey through Frithjof Holmboe’s life. The presentation will trace his immigration from Norway and the establishment of his family in early-20th century Rhinelander. It will also explore his work as a photographer and filmmaker, as well as the lasting legacy he left through the creation of a nature preserve on the Pelican River, now owned and managed by Northwoods Land Trust.
There will be an exclusive viewing of some of Holmboe’s wildflower photography. Frank Schroyer will then provide a visual tour of the Holmboe Conifer Forest as it exists today. He will share insights into its unique habitat and ecological features, and highlighting the significant reasons for its preservation as a wild area.
