Time Management: The Key to Success

Category

“I have way too much on my plate!” “I’m so overwhelmed!” “I just can’t focus when doing schoolwork at home.” “I’m way behind in my classes.” These are just a few of the statements I hear on a regular basis while working as an instructor in the Academic Success lab here at Nicolet College.

Believe me, I get it! I just finished a degree online this past summer and I vividly remember the difficulty of juggling work, school, home, and a social life. It’s definitely not easy. If you are in this situation, you are not alone.

In 2017, 71% of the nation's 19.7 million college undergraduates also worked while getting a degree (National Education Association, 2018). The good news is, there are strategies to help you manage your time more effectively.

Competency-based education and online classes can be a great option, offering the flexibility needed for working students. The problem is finding a way to effectively balance multiple responsibilities. This is where prioritizing and setting up a schedule becomes critical to a your success.

Without a structured personal schedule, many students struggle with finding a way to manage their time in a way that does justice to all these important parts of life. Across the board, students who set up a personal schedule tend to do much better with handling the many aspects of their lives. They also are more successful and less stressed.

With that in mind, I’ve included two links that were helpful to me when I was trying to create a balance. One contains time management tips, and the other is a worksheet created to help prioritize and plan out your week.

None of us can slow down time or create more hours in a day, but we can manage the time we have more effectively. Give it a try! And of course, if you need academic assistance or a just quiet place to study, check out the Academic Success classroom Lakeside Center - 207. Hope to see you there!
