Each fall, we spotlight emerging Midwest talent. Current and recent MFA students (Masters of Fine Arts) offer a glimpse into contemporary art, and the concepts artists are exploring. Kalil Mitchell creates luminous, transcendental abstractions where light, color, and space intertwine in quiet dialogue. Her paintings invite viewers into contemplative realms of connection, impermanence, and becoming. Originally from Santa Cruz, California, Mitchell earned her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is currently an instructor of drawing, painting, and color theory at UW Madison and will work with Nicolet College art students through classroom engagement and mentorship.
