Student Spotlight: Lauren Rentmeester
School of Business & Entrepreneurship
Program: Cosmetology
Lauren earned a bachelor's degree, worked in her field of study for five years, and realized it wasn't for her. She made a drastic career change, and looked to Nicolet College for the education she needed.
How did you arrive at the decision to attend Nicolet College?
Previously, I had gone to college before. I earned my bachelor's degree in healthcare management and then did management and leadership and public health as minors. And so I worked in healthcare for about five years and decided it really wasn't for me.
I actually grew up helping my mom in the salon. She's a hairdresser. And so after life throwing me a few curveballs, I decided to take a leap and start a new chapter, and follow in my mom's footsteps. And actually my brother's footsteps; he graduated last year in the cosmetology program as well.
Share a specific example of a highlight of your time at Nicolet College.
I would say the Student Hair Show. It was a really good exhibit of showcasing all of our talents. I think we have a great class that is super talented. So, for me to even bounce ideas, and learn from the other girls, and see what they can offer as well was cool.
What do you like about Nicolet College?
I really like how welcoming everyone is. If I have a question, everyone is super quick to respond. And there are so many resources for everyone to be successful in any program that they are enrolled in.
What's your experience in the Cosmetology program been like?
It's been great. I think the instructors do a great job teaching what we all need to know for our practical and our written boards. I enjoy the lecture and then the hands-on aspect as well. And really just learning together and bouncing ideas off each other to continuously improve.
Who has made a big impact on your college journey?
My mom. She has been doing hair for over 40 years, and she's my role model. I think she's definitely the reason why I'm here. And it's cool that Nicolet can offer this program so close to home, so that way I can still be close with her, and have the shop talk with her and say, "Hey, we learned this today!" Then she can kind of give me tips and tricks as well.
What would you tell someone considering enrolling at Nicolet College?
You won't regret it. Everyone is super helpful. And really, the experience here is super welcoming, and they know how to set you up for success. You have your academic advisors, who are super important people to reach out to if you have any questions.
