Area Students Compete in Nicolet College High School Competition Day

Hundreds of students competed in the Nicolet College High School Competition Day on March 1, 2024.

Over 200 students from 12 Northwoods high schools were invited to campus for the day-long event including Crandon, Goodman, Elcho, Lakeland Union, Laona, Mercer, Northland Pines, Rhinelander, School of Options and Applied Research (SOAR), Three Lakes, Tomahawk and Wabeno High Schools.

Students went head-to-head to compete in 15 different areas in their program of choice, ranging from culinary to ceramics to cosmetology, and everything in between. The event was an opportunity for students to visit the Nicolet College campus and enjoy a day of fun competition.

Winners were awarded prizes and bragging rights! In addition, four students won scholarships from the Nicolet College Foundation.

The first-place winners of each competition are as follows:

Hands-On Business Jeopardy – Ian Mouw, Kaya Szews, Jenna Erikson, Traeton Fogerty and Jared Kaufman (Three Lakes High School)

Physiology & Biology – Sarah Marshall and Nicole Brunette (Rhinelander High School)

Beauty Behind the Madness – Rachael Reilly (Tomahawk High School)

Reading to Children – Olivia England (Lakeland Union High School)

Crime Scene Investigation – Mason Waters and Hayden Flanders (Lakeland Union High School)

Ceramics – Lovey VanZile (Laona High School)

Still Life Drawing Competition – Emma Hinton (Northland Pines High School)

Public Safety Challenge – Lydia Ziert, Caleb VanDeWeerd and Montgomery Framke (Tomahawk        High School)

Health Occupations Mind & Body Challenge – Lily Palubicki, Ava Cebe, Matthew Jahnke, Alayna McCorkle (Crandon High School)

Automotive Technician – Team winners: Tyler Miller, Ben Letsinger and Breydon Peterson; Individual winner: Tyler Miller (Northland Pines High School)

Flash Fiction – Kael Oates (Tomahawk High School)

Build a Website – Samuel Kurth and Samuel Nelson (Tomahawk High School)

Robot Pickup and Place Competition – Cameron Schmidt, Mika Rempp and Liam Jelinski (Lakeland Union High School)

Cupcake Challenge – Hailey Connor, Walker Winkelman, Timber Cronauer and Colten Cooper (Laona High School)

Welding Competition – Individual winner: Brett Borchardt (Tomahawk High School); Team winners: Conner Lawrence and Ryan Schunk (Crandon High School)
