Financial assistance available for Basic Heavy Equipment Operator class
Feb. 21, 2018
Nicolet College will offer a Basic Heavy Equipment Operator class starting March 19 that will give graduates the entry-level skills to work with large machines in several different industries.
“There’s strong demand across the region for people, both men and women, with these skills,” said Sandy Bishop, Nicolet dean of Workforce and Economic Development.
“We’re working closely with several industry partners and sponsors to coordinate the class. Their commitment to make this successful is a clear indication that the jobs are out there.”
Employment fields for heavy equipment operators include forestry, construction, highway maintenance, manufacturing, and others.
Classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays through April 13. Instruction will include a combination of classroom learning on the Nicolet Campus and hands-on field instruction at different businesses that utilize heavy equipment.
Along with basic equipment operation and technique, the nearly 100 hours of training will also include basic equipment maintenance, site preparation and grading, transporting equipment, flagging, and on-the-job safety.
While class fees total $1,250, several entities are providing financial assistance. The Grow North Economic Development Corporation is offering $10,000 in scholarships which will fully fund the tuition for eight students. Other organizations offering funding include Food Share and Employment Training (FSET), the Tribal Labor Advisory Committee (TLAC), and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation TrANS Program.
Students will be required to purchase a Heavy Equipment Operations textbook at their own expense at a cost of $85.
Businesses partnering with Nicolet for the class include CrossTrac Forestry Equipment, Enterprise Forest Products, Musson Brothers, Inc., Nortrax, and Ponsse North America.
Other sponsoring organizations include the Sokaogon Chippewa Community and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
