UW-Madison’s top woodwind quintet to perform at Nicolet College Feb. 26

Feb. 17, 2016

The rich and captivating sound of the Wingra Woodwind Quintet will fill the Nicolet College Theatre when this highly acclaimed classical music ensemble returns to the Northwoods for a special performance at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 26.

Long noted for being as musically accessible as they are dynamic, the quintet-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison balances traditional classical works with contemporary and cross-cultural compositions.

Wingra Woodwind Quintet“This will be a wonderful opportunity to experience familiar and new works performed by professional musicians of the highest quality,” said Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall. “The performance is sure to please people who have been classical music lovers for years as well as those who are new to classical music and looking to expand their musical tastes.”

Between pieces, ensemble members will talk with the audience about the compositions. An informal reception will follow the concert to give individuals the chance to meet the musicians and chat personally with each.

During the afternoon before the performance, the quintet will also hold a workshop for Rhinelander High School students interested in music.

Founded in 1965 on the UW-Madison campus, the quintet today tours the nation and the state, earning kudos from The New York Times for its “consistently sophisticated, sensitive, and thoroughly vital” performances.

Musicians in the Wingra Woodwind Quintet are all faculty members in UW-Madison’s School of Music. They include Wesley Warnhoff on clarinet, Stephanie Jutt on flute, Kostas Tiliakos on oboe; Marc Vallon on bassoon; and Joanna Schulz playing the French horn.
