Service Learning class to help resdient of Flint, Michigan

            Nicolet College students in the Service Learning class are well on their way to reaching their $3,000 goal to help the residents of Flint, Mich., after a successful first day of fundraising at Walmart in Rhinelander.

            They collected nearly half that amount Saturday, March 6, with another day of fundraising set for Saturday, March 12, back at Walmart. Donations are also being collected at Nelson’s County Market in Tomahawk through March 12.

            As part of their Business Management degree, students select projects where they can apply classroom learning to projects that help others.

            “I’ve been waiting for this class my whole time at Nicolet,” said student Brian Vida. “Everything we have learned in the past three or four semesters, we’re putting it all together, putting it to use, and doing something to benefit somebody else.”

            Flint’s water supply has been tainted with lead and other carcinogens since the city switched over the water source to the Flint River in early 2015. Residents cannot use the water from their taps and have to rely on bottled water.

            When the project is complete, the class will give the money to the American Red Cross to help the residents of Flint.

            On April 9 and 10, the students will launch a second project as they sponsor the Arts and Crafts Show at the Tomahawk Home Show at the Tomahawk High School. Funds from this effort will go to support local veterans, firefighters, and the Humane Society.
