Nursing Assistant evening classes coming to Tomahawk, Eagle RiverDec. 13, 2016
Nicolet College will offer Nursing Assistant classes in Tomahawk and Eagle River next semester with evening classes for individuals seeking a career in health care.
“For many, one of the biggest challenges to getting a college education is finding the time to attend classes,” said Nicolet Dean of Health Occupations Lenore Blemke. “By giving people the option of taking classes in the evening and holding classes closer to where people live, we’re looking to remove barriers and create a smooth pathway to college for those who may not have otherwise been able to reach that goal.”
The evening sequence of classes in Tomahawk will run from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays Feb. 6 through April 19. The clinical portion of the instruction will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays April 24 to May 17. Classes will be held at the Tomahawk High School and clinicals at area health care facilities.
The evening sequence of classes in Eagle River will run from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursday Jan. 24 through April 25 at the Northland Pines High School and clinicals at area health care facilities.
With the three-credit Nursing Assistant technical diploma being the first step to earning a Nursing degree, Blemke noted that many Nursing Assistant graduates land entry-level jobs in the field and also continue taking classes for the associate’s degree in Nursing.
“This way students make money, they gain valuable work experience, and they take classes that will advance their careers,” she said. “It’s a great recipe for success.”
Nursing Assistants are commonly employed in long-term care facilities, hospitals, community-based residential facilities, and home health agencies.
Blemke said demand is high for those with a college credential in the health occupations with job placement rates for Nicolet graduates commonly in the 90 to 100 percent range.
According to the college’s 2013-14 Graduate Follow-up Report, the median annual starting wage for Nursing Assistant graduates was $22,219 and almost twice that at $41,493 for those graduating with the two-year associate’s degree in Nursing.
