What is an Internship?

An internship is an educational experience that gives you an opportunity to gain practical work experience in your area of study. Participating employers provide a supervised learning environment where you can transfer your classroom instruction to on-the-job training that cannot be duplicated in the classroom.

How does an Internship work?

Nicolet's Internship Coordinator will work with you to find an appropriate site and will arrange for work-site agreements between you and the employer. Most Internships are part-time and are completed within one semester. As an intern, you'll earn college credit and may be paid for your work. Most Internships require initial and final evaluation forms to be completed by you and your employer. (Due to the shorter length of Barber/Cosmetology, Criminal Justice and Auto Technician Internships, only a final evaluation is required.) These evaluations are important feedback opportunities to assess your progress during the Internship and help determine if program outcomes are being met. The evaluations are designed as a tool to assist you in completing a productive and meaningful Internship.

How will I benefit from an Internship?

An internship will provide you with a valuable opportunity to:

  • Improve specific skills by applying what you have learned in the classroom in an on-the-job setting
  • Develop a professional, working relationship with your employer
  • Become familiar with professional responsibilities
  • Validate your career goals
  • Acquire a professional work reference
  • Establish an employment credential file (resume, cover letter, references, etc.)

What will be expected of me?

As an intern, you'll be expected to:

  • Set and work toward goals
  • Perform assigned duties effectively
  • Remain with the employer throughout the internship experience
  • Work as a team member
  • Maintain academics during the school term
  • Demonstrate motivation and the ability to learn
  • Work the hours you are scheduled
  • Take part in job-related seminars

What is the college's role in the Internship?

Nicolet College will:

  • Provide you with job-related classroom instruction
  • Meet with your employer to evaluate your performance on the job
  • Specify Internship requirements and outcomes
  • Refer you to employers offering Internships in your program of study
