Full Moon Paddle

S3 SK, C, RK

Prior to our ancestors refining agriculture and living with the cycles of the sun, we moved to lunar patterns. Get reacquainted with these patterns on this evening paddle. We’ll set out on shimmering, reflective waters, not for a physically demanding paddle, but rather to let the gentle strokes of the blade and the magnetism of the moon guide us like a consistent tide.

Sea Kayak Adventures

For those of you who have had one or two basic kayaking courses and are ready to test your kayaking skills, below are adventure trips to choose from.

Historic Apostle Islands First Time Lake Superior Kayaking

S4 SK

When you visit Sand Island in the Apostle Islands it is sometimes difficult to picture a once bustling community built by Swedish homesteaders, hearty fisherman, and a logging industry served by several roads and vehicles. Today, the island offers quiet serenity, and visual wonders of the big lake. We'll spend two nights camping on this beautiful island taking in the history that intrigues all who visit. This trip will also include a visit to the Raspberry Island Lighthouse and Bayfield Maritime Museum to further prime our imaginations about what life was like in this area generations ago. Don't worry we'll have plenty of time for paddling, campfires, and enjoying camp, too. Students must have completed a basic safety course. Wet suits and dry bags included. 60-807-69500

Bryn Lottig/Wil Losch
Friday - Sunday, July 20 - 22
Meet at Little Sand Bay near Bayfield at 10 AM Friday morning
Class #10112 Fee: $205
Class #10113 Fee with kayak rental: $265

The Turtle Flambeau Flowage

S3 SK

The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage consists of approximately 14,000 acres of water, 114 miles of mainland shoreline, 195 islands, and arguably the richest and most remote water body for wildlife in the state. It hosts the highest breeding density of bald eagles, osprey, and loons in Wisconsin as well as being home to black terns, merlins, great blue herons, and a diversity of waterfowl and songbirds. 60-807-69500

10 AM - 4 PM
Class #10110 Fee: $30
Class #10111 Fee with kayak rental: $45

The Willow Flowage

S3 SK

The Willow is one of our favorites as over 6,400 acres of water offers a paddlers paradise with access to numerous islands and backwaters. Surrounded by swamps, bogs, and other watery lowlands, the Willow Flowage is isolated from roads and development. Its sense of remoteness, abundant wildlife, and scenic natural shoreline beckon the paddler. This year, two of our staff “camp chefs” will be preparing a paddlers picnic on one of the islands. 60-807-69500

The Rainbow Flowage is a 3,153 acre lake located in Oneida County. The Wisconsin River flows in and out of this majestic body of water. Countless bays and inlets await us to explore. Also, as a special “bonus” for paddlers, the Rainbow Flowage always has exquisite driftwood for those who enjoy something really special. 60-807-65200

Keweenaw Kayaking

S3 SK

Back by popular demand: return to the Keweenaw! We’ve combined a quaint hotel, the grandest of the lakes, and great food for this introduction to sea kayaking. Thousands of forested acres meet Lake Superior at Copper Harbor, Michigan. Wake up each morning to pure relaxation followed by sea kayak paddling instruction and exploration to the lighthouse located at the entrance to Copper Harbor. The peninsula also offers many opportunities for paddling adventure on the Bete Grise side, depending on conditions. If winds dictate, we’ll paddle to one of the sheltered inland lakes or hike to some of the properties recently purchased by the Nature Conservancy. Friday evening we will dine lakeside at the Harbor Haus; Saturday your guides will treat you to a gourmet meal and campfire prepared in a private yurt preserve overlooking the Big Lake and a historic lighthouse. Your guides are excited to present this extraordinary experience and educational trip with numerous surprises along the way. Price includes lodging, two evening meals, kayaks and transportation from Lakeland Campus. 60-807-69500

Centuries of wave action carved intricate caves into the sandstone cliffs of Lake Superior’s Apostle Island shoreline. Learn about the geology, and if the lake is tranquil, paddle in and out of the caves delicate arches, vaulted chambers, passageways and deepest recesses. If winds prevent paddling to the caves in one location, we will paddle in an area where conditions permit a safe trip. This will be a seven-mile paddle. Students must have completed a basic safety course. 60-807-69500

Apostle Islands: Devil's Exploration!

S4 SK

This Apostle Islands sea kayaking adventure will take you to the northern most islands off the Bayfield peninsula, Devil’s Island. Depending on weather and permits, we will plan on venturing part of the way out on our first day and then spending the next two nights on Rocky, putting us on a great beach and very close to the Devil’s Island Sea Caves! Devil’s Island is known for its epic sea caves and 1834 lighthouse. Weather permitting, we will meander through the caves and tour the lighthouse. To participate in this trip you should be at least an intermediate paddler. 60-807-69500
