Computer Use Policy 218
Nicolet Area Technical College has made available software packages, computer equipment, and Internet access for students, staff, and on a limited basis, community members. These resources are considered a privilege. If it is determined inappropriate use of these resources has taken place, then one or more of the following actions may be taken:
- privileges denied
- the offender subjected to the appropriate College discipline policy
- the offender referred to law enforcement officials for action
Guidelines
The following guidelines govern computer use on the Nicolet Campus:
- The College may monitor access to ensure security and operating performance of equipment, enforce college policies, and ensure proper business utilization.
- The College reserves the right to limit overall access if policies are violated.
- The College may authorize confidential passwords, but there is no expectation of privacy in materials sent or received by students, staff, or community members via the College network.
- All materials sent over the College networks must correctly identify the creator and receiver.
- A home page created on College equipment by a student or community member must include the following disclaimer: The material located at this site is not endorsed, sponsored, or provided by or on behalf of Nicolet College.
- 6. Students and community members may be required to supply their own paper when printing documents in some computer areas and labs.
Violations
Violations include but are not limited to:
- Intentional introduction of computer viruses.
- Deliberately altering system files in ways that negatively affect other users or compromise the integrity of functionality of the network or individual computers.
- Storing or transmitting violent, threatening, or offensive material.
- Deliberate destruction, damage, or unauthorized access to Nicolet College hardware or 218.2 software.
- Unauthorized copying of software and/or violating copyright protection laws and guidelines.
- Downloading games, music, movies, etc. unless a staff member doing so for instructional purposes or a student doing so as part of an authorized class assignment.
- Using any College computer to play computer games during work time unless a staff member is doing so for instructional purposes, a student doing so as part of an authorized class assignment, or a student using computers designated specifically for such a purpose.
- Employing slanderous, obscene, or abusive language, using sexual, racial, or ethnic slurs, or engaging in any kind of harassing behavior, while making use of email, electronic bulletin boards, discussion lists, etc.
- Deliberate misrepresentation of user identity.
- Unauthorized use of computer accounts, files, and data.
Permissible Use
Student, staff, and community members may use this technology for personal use as long as:
- The use if lawful.
- The use is not prohibited by College policy.
- There is no commercial gain or private profit.
- No federal or state laws are violated regarding privacy.
- No laws are violated concerning race or sexual discrimination, including sexual harassment.
- The use does not involve unauthorized passwords or attempt to circumvent system security in order to gain unauthorized access.
- The use is limited and does not prevent others from accessing the equipment.
