Computers for General Student Use

Computer Labs

There are a large number of computer labs on our Lake Julia campus, Lakeland campus and our outreach centers. There are five types of labs to support student learning: Specialized Teaching, Specialized Support, General Teaching, General Support, and Portable.

Specialized Teaching Labs are available in the following programs:

  • Automotive Technician
  • Information Technologies
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD, CAM, GIS)
  • Welding (Robotics)
  • Nursing
  • Graphic Arts
  • Child Care and Development
  • Transfer Program physics lab

All but two of the labs operate with a Microsoft based operating system on systems with Intel processors. Two labs, Graphic Arts and the Physics lab utilize the Apple/Macintosh environment.

Student Support

Specialized Support Labs provide specific support and aid to students. They exist for students to utilize, typically on their own or with individual help, to access a variety of learning programs that aid in learning or learning accommodation.

Program Labs

Basic Education Program

The Basic Education Program maintains a lab in the Learning Resource Center with twelve stations and offers students access to self-paced learning programs such as Ellis and Plato which provide basic skill building in the areas of math, English, and study skills.

Special Needs Program

Another lab is maintained by the Special Needs program in the Art Tech Center and contains five computers that provide appropriate accommodations for disabled students on campus. The Special Needs lab includes large display monitors, touch screen monitors, and voice-activated software programs to aid students with learning disabilities.

General Teaching Labs

General Teaching Labs are available in a number of instructional programs but are not exclusive to just that program. Instead, these labs provide a variety of software to meet the needs of specific courses.

Six of these labs currently exist and are used primarily by the Information Technology (IT) and Business related instructional areas.

  • Four labs are located on the Lake Julia campus in the Tamarack Center.
  • One is located at the Lakeland campus in Minocqua
  • One is located at the Northern Advantage Job Center in downtown Rhinelander.

In order to meet the demands of the information technology boom, these labs are typically the most advanced on campus in terms of hardware and software configurations.

Outreach Lab Sites

Three labs are located on sites and are used for Nicolet College lab resources:

  • Two general teaching labs at the tribal communities (specifically, Lac du Flambeau and Mole Lake ).
  • One lab exists at the Mercer School District.

These labs are currently used for continuing education, GED and SAT testing, Business/Mid-Management, University Transfer and 103 level computer courses. However, they can also support other disciplines and are open for student and public use for word processing etc.

General Support Labs

General Support Labs are also available to support student studies by providing access to information. Students can utilize these labs on an individual basis, accessing information databases to aid in classroom work and personal edification and growth. These general use labs are also utilized as teaching labs, e-mail access, and provide computer-based assessment of students on campus.

Six general support labs are available to students.
