What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is a course management system that allows for dynamic learning to occur in the online environment.  The tools provided by the Blackboard software allow students and faculty to post and share documents and other course content, 24/7 access to grades, write via email and posted discussion boards, and even have synchronous, or real-time conversations in a virtual classroom.  

What is the url for Blackboard and how do I access the link for
logging in?

Blackboard is located at http://blackboard.nicoletcollege.edu You can access the login page through Nicolet's home page at www.nicoletcollege.edu. Use the Blackboard link in the upper right corner of the web page.

What is my username and password?

Your username is your student ID # and your password is your student number also (unless you have accessed Blackboard previously and changed your password).

How do I change my password?

Log into Blackboard and click on Tools, Personal Information, Change Password.   I've forgotten my password.

How do I obtain a new password?

There is a link on the Blackboard login page (where you put your username and password). Click the Forgot Your Password link and follow the instructions. A new password will be sent to you via email.  Your must have a working Nicolet email account.

Why aren’t my courses showing up when I log into Blackboard?

Blackboard is used for all online and hybrid courses. The Blackboard enrollment process starts five (5) working days before the beginning of each semester.  Your professor may choose to open the course early or wait until the mandatory open date for online/hybrid courses which is the first day of the semester. Not all professors use Blackboard for face-to-face courses.  If you need further assistance clarifying your access to a Blackboard course, please contact the Help Desk at 715-365-4478 or helpdesk@nicoletcollege.edu.  

What other hardware/software requirements are necessary for Blackboard?

It is imperative to have an updated internet browser. These requirements refer specifically to your computer hardware. “Minimum requirements” are meant for basic use of Blackboard.   Click here to review information on browser requirements 

A course from a previous semester is still showing up.  What should I do?

Call the Help Desk at 715-365-4478.  As a temporary solution, click on the “Manage My Courses Module Settings” icon (upper right hand corner in the My Courses module and remove the course you do not want listed, by clicking on the green check mark.  

How do I find things in an online course?

Click on the course title in your My Courses module.  Every course has a navigation bar on the left that provides access to different sections. For a detailed overview, open the Nicolet College Blackboard Template.

Why don’t I receive emails sent by my instructor?

You must have an active Nicolet email account. View instructions on how to create/activate your email accounts.  Once your email account is created, you should check your Blackboard account to be sure it is accurate.  Login to Blackboard, click on “Personal Information”, “Edit Personal Information” under the Tools module on the left side. Check the Email field. If your Nicolet email is not listed, type in your complete email address. Do not change this to a personal account, e.g. Yahoo, Gmail, etc.  

When I click on a test link or a web site nothing happens.  What is the problem?

Instructors can set tests, external web links and other files to open in a new window so students do not lose their place in Blackboard.  If the student has their Internet browser set to block pop-ups, these new windows will not open.  To access these features, the student needs to change the settings on their browser to allow pop-ups or disable their pop-up blockers.

What kinds of support services are available for online learners?

The college offers a variety of support services for online students.  Our Academic Success Center can help students develop basic computer skills enabling them to utilize Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to complete assignments in an online environment.  If you have specific technical questions, contact the Nicolet Help Desk at 715-365-4478 or helpdesk@nicoletcollege.edu.
